Virtual memory in a nutshell is space on a hard drive that is used as memory. For a much more in-depth article check out Wikipedia's article.

For a slight increase in performance you can increase the size of your virtual memory. Unlike physical memory (ram) you do not have to do anything but change the size of the file. Here's how:

1. Hold the Start (flag) key and press the Break key

2. Change the tab to Advanced

3. Click the Settings button in the Performance area

4. Change the tab to Advanced

5. Click the Change button in the Virtual Memory area

To set a custom amount, bullet Custom Size and set the amount. The recommended amount (not the same as what Windows recommends) for an 80-160gb hard drive is Initial: 1000 | Maximum: 1600. To apply click Set and close the open windows.

To let the system manage the amount of Virtual Memory (Default), bullet System Managed Size and apply by clicking Set. Close all windows.

[edit] Windows Vista

  2. On the left-hand pane, click Advanced system settings You must have administrative permission to do this
  3. Click the Settings button in the Performance area
  4. Change the tab to Advanced
  5. Click the Change button in the Virtual Memory area
  6. Uncheck Automatically Manage...
  7. Follow the instructions after step five of the Windows XP section.
