[edit] Windows XP

I have found that this bit of information is repeated quite often in the HTFC forum and in face to face help.

The Display Properties (DP from here on) dialog box allows you to control nearly all of the visual aspects of your system. There are multiple ways of accessing DP, but I am only going to mention one here.

  1. Right click on your Desktop
  2. Select properties.

The sections below are on each of DP's five tabs.

[edit] Themes

As the description text states, “A theme is a background plus a set of sounds, icons, and other elements to help you personalize your computer with one click.” Before we go any further, I recommend that you save your current theme by clicking the Save As… button and saving the file. The dropdown box allows you to switch quickly almost all of the editable aspects of Windows user interface. If you find one you like, click Apply and wait while Windows applies it (to go back, simply Apply the one you saved).

[edit] Desktop

The Desktop tab is the first step in creating your own theme. This is where you pick the background picture for your desktop. If you cannot find the one you want in the list, click Browse… to look through your files. You can use the Position dropdown box to change how the picture is placed on your desktop. I prefer stretched, but the image will not be distorted if you use Center. Tile is interesting too. If you want to change the color that surrounds your icon text or you picked None as your picture, you can use the Color picker.

The Customize Desktop… button allows you to dictate which system icons appear on your desktop. You can also run (or not) the Desktop Cleanup Wizard from here. When you are done, click OK. Then click Apply to apply the changes to your desktop.
