[edit] Windows Vista
Desktop icons are pictures (with a caption explaining the purpose) that reside on the Desktop and link to other areas of your computer or the Internet. Icons are commonly called icons, however, not all desktop icons are indeed shortcuts. You can have a variety of types of icons on your desktop including files, links to websites, and shortcuts to programs or folders.
[edit] Changing Icon Size
In Windows Vista, you can change the size of your desktop icons (possible to an extent in Windows XP, but with different method).
- Right click on the Desktop (not an icon)
- Hold the mouse over the View menu
- Select Large, Medium, or Classic to change the icon sizes
[edit] Make All of Your Icons Disappear
You can also make all of your icons disappear (or reappear).
- Right click on the Desktop
- Hold the mouse over the View menu
- Uncheck or check Show Desktop Icons (this does not delete the icons, it just hides them from view)
[edit] Organize Your Icons
You can also organize your icons if you are a neat freak like me (almost the same as Windows XP method).
- Right click on the Desktop
- Hold the mouse over the Sort menu
- Pick a method to sort by (I prefer Type)
[edit] Conclusion
Windows provides loads of articles that explain common tasks with their software. I dug up these articles in the Windows Help and How-To.
