XP SP2 Internet unstable, Vista on same network is fine
My network problem is instability in the Internet access on my Windows XP
SP2 Professional connected directly on the router with a UTP cat 5e.
My notebook with Windows Vista Home Premium access the Internet smoothly,
either wired (also UTP 5e) or wirelessly, using WEP.
Both are connected to a DI-624 router.
The router WAN port is connected to a Siemens Speedstream 4200 ADSL Modem
for Internet access.
I canīt find where the problem is.
I am using Firefox on both computers.
Doing basically the same thing.
I canīt find even a starter point to solve this problem.
My only guess is that it is OS related, havenīt installed Vista on the
desktop machine, but that is too much, I just want my XP to work fine.
Any help, hint or guess is much appreciated

XP has an optionset up in the Networking which can cause problems. QoS
Packet Scheduler seems to only be required if your router uses QoS.

Hi
I do not know what is the phenomenon that you are calling instability.
In general, start with checking the computer for "Junk" (Viruses, spywares,
etc.)
After cleaning run this process, http://www.ezlan.net/clean.html#refreshnet
Jack (MVP-Networking).

Re: XP SP2 Internet unstable, Vista on same network is fine
It was probably it. I am now using D-Link DIR-655, which support QoS.
The problem no longer exists and when I check the router Internet sessions I
do see some with different priorities, probably set by the QoS Packet
Scheduler.
The router is new in the network, so it is still possible that the problem
exists but has not been seen yet, if so I will post here again to inform
you.
I think the problem wont happen again, though.
Thanks for your time and analysis.

Re: XP SP2 Internet unstable, Vista on same network is fine
Instability was: at some time everything downloads fine, the other time it
either slows down drastically or doesnt work at all.
Well, I had already done the cleaning, the problem was not it.
The idea from smlunatick seems to be the one.
Thanks for the site, neat stuff.
And thanks for your help too =)
