XP Pro Requests Password When Accessing Folders From Another PC
Hello,
I hope someone can help me! I have an XP Pro Desktop wired to a linksys
router. I have a laptop that I recently installed Windows Vista to. My
roommate also has a Desktop with XP pro wired through the router. Prior to
upgrading my laptop to Vista, I used to copy files and folders from XP Pro
Desktop. After I upgraded my laptop to Vista, I can see my XP Pro Desktop,
but when I try to access it via Window Explorer I get a pop-up that requests
a username and password.
I can access the folders on my Vista laptop from both Desktops with XP Pro.
I can access the folders on my roommates Desktop with XP pro from my desktop
with XP pro and my Laptop with Vista. I cannot access the folders on my XP
Pro desktop from either my roommates XP Pro Desktop or my Vista Laptop
without getting the pop-up requesting a username and password.
I only use Windows firewall on all three machines. No third party firewalls
are installed, however, the XP Pro Desktop that I cannot access did have Zone
Alarm installed which I recently removed. I have allowing file/printer
checked in Windows Firewall. All Computers are in the same workgroup.
If anyone has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate your assistance!

Firewalls aren't the problem. A firewall can allow or block access
to a network share, but it doesn't cause a password prompt.
A password prompt indicates that the credentials of the user who
requests access to a network share don't match the permissions that
you've set up for the network share.
On your XP Pro desktop, go to Control Panel > Folder Options, scroll
down the list of options, and see whether the setting for "Use simple
file sharing" is enabled.
If "Use simple file sharing" is enabled, open a command prompt window
and enter this command:
net user guest /active:yes
If "Use simple file sharing" is disabled, create user accounts on your
XP Pro desktop with the same user name and password that you use to
log onto your Vista laptop and that your roommate uses on his XP Pro
laptop.

Re: XP Pro Requests Password When Accessing Folders From Another P
Steve,
In short, you are a life saver! Where do I sent my check? ) Simple File
Sharing was not enabled, so I enabled it. Not sure if that corrected the
problem, or when I entered the net user guest command.
Thanks!!

You're welcome, Scott!! I'm glad that my suggestion helped you solve
the problem.
For payment, please send an E-mail to my wife telling her that I
actually do something useful on the computer on those rare occasions
when I'm not playing Hearts. :-)
