Default *XP* Pro logs on to network but nothing else

We get error -
profile: Access denied
Ping: responds if numbers used
Network: only shows a couple of NEW XP (as apposed to 98/2000 type) names -
no entire network. no Windows network, no MS Terminal Services and no Web
Client.
Hardware: Works. Booted into the 2nd install of XP Pro and setup the network
