We've got a windows XP home machine that can get on the
network, acquire an IP address through DHCP, and pretty
much do anything except ftp files. It can ping the server
in question, and ping anything else internally and externally.
However, the machine cannot be pinged by any other local
machine. This is true whether the machine is connected via
a wireless or wired interface. TCP/IP Filtering says it is
off; So is the internet connection firewall.
It sure seems like it is ignoring or has closed a couple of
key ports. Any ideas?
If you can ping other computers and other computers can't ping your
computer, this is often caused by an improperly configured firewall
on you computer. For example, ICF should not be enabled on LAN NIC.
Don't send e-mail or reply to me except you need consulting services.

Re: XP Home Can See Everyone; No One Can Ping XP Home
That's what we initially thought. ICF is shown as disabled
for either the wired or wireless NIC. But it is acting as
if it were enabled.

Re: XP Home Can See Everyone; No One Can Ping XP Home
I'm having the same problem with a laptop running XP Pro -
it seems like its deliberately ignoring incoming pings
because it can pig anything else and the LAN connection
works fine otherwise. I wondered if this was an
intentional move by MS? More likely a bug? I think so.
Does anyone have any information on this?
