Default XP and 98se network problem

This is the first time I've tried to set up a network, so I'm sure I just did something wrong. I'm trying to network two computers together, one is a AMD3000 with XP, the other is a Pent.3 with 98se. I ran through the network wizard and made the disk to use on the 98se computer. That went fine, the 98se said everything was fine. I tried to finish the wizard on the XP and when is tried to set up the connection it just said it couldn't complete the network. I've tried it several times and rebooted several times, nothing changed. Right now, I've got the XP connected to my DSL (internet is working fine) and I just have an ethernet cable running between the two computers. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate it. If you need any more info., just ask.
P.S. I'm computer literate but this is my first attempt at a network, so give suggestions in small steps. Thanks.

here are some resources for you ....

quick things to check...the network cable should be "crossover" if you are
not using a router (which i recommend for anyone on highspeed)

dissconnect your dsl and turn off XP's firewall , see if the computers will
see each other

I suggest you do a little reading here
