Default WUSB11 Linksys Wireless Adapter not working in WinXP

I just purchased a new Windows XP system to add to my
network. (The
other computers on my network are operable so the problem
is not with
my network). However, when I tried to install my old
Linksys Wireless
USB Network adapter (which I had used on a Windows 98
system and it
was running perfectly) it will not work. I have this same
problem with another WUSB11 v.2.6 (Linksys Wireless
Network Adapter) which also works on 98 but not XP.

I tried installing the 2.6 drivers (using Windows Plug &
Play and a
newer 2.6 CD that I got for another computer that I added
to my
network which is also runing a 2.8 v as well as the
drivers available on the linksys website) and when the
computer
recognizes it (I get an icon in the system tray "USB
Peripheral
Found" which quickly became "Linksys Wireless Adapter
v.2.6
found) I get a message that my wireless network is
unavailable (with
an icon in the system tray of two computers and a
big "X").
I followed the instructions on the Linksys website and
nothing
worked. I tried uninstalling the driver and modifying the
System
Manager in Device Manager and yet it does not work. In
fact, once I
had clicked on uninstall driver and deleted LSWLUSB.SYS
and
LSWLUSBX.sys, disabled system restore, and had no Linksys
icons on my
desktop, program file, system tools, device manager, etc
etc etc,
than plugged the Wireless (WUSB11) adapter it immediately
recognized
that I had plugged in the Linksys Wireless Adapter v.2.6
(which means
it wasn't uninstalled) and yet still gave me the "wireless
network unavailable" icon (and when clicking "View
Wireless
Networks, nothing was available. I could ONLY click the
"cancel" button). I uninstalled, re-installed. I called
Linksys tech support and they couldn't help me.

Also, how do I completely delete the adapter from my
computer when uninstall does not do it? How do I delete
it from my Registry?

This wireless adapter works on my Win98 computer (I have
owned this
one for a year or so but it is the wireless one with the
antenna on
it, which according to the pic on your website [on the
datasheet]is
the 2.6 and not the 2.5 or newer). A newer wireless
adapter which I
just purchased (Linksys Wireless-B USB Network Adapter
2.8 works on
that computer [I am currently using it on another new
computer that
was bought for my office, in fact, I'm using it on the
computer I am
writing this now]).

What do I need to do? I have been playing with this for
hours and am
afraid of making my computer worse than it is simply
without my
wireless adapter working. I tried using your knowledge
base options
and I tried resetting the router, all to no avail.
