Wireless Connections - problems

I currently use a Dell 5100 with Windows XP and a
wireless card to connect to my home network. I want to
connect to other "open/unlocked" networks at firends and
school and am unable to do so. Does anyone have any
advice as to what I need to do to connect? Or can anyone
point me to a good website?
