Default wired internal network adaptor

I am trying to help a friend with an older PC running XP which needs a
network adaptor fitted. My question, is should I remove the old adaptor first
which is working but not a LAN card.

Not if the old adapter is needed for some purpose and there is an open
slot to install the new one.
