Default Windows XP Networking

Hi,
I think I have my network close to working, but I am unable to share printers or files yet. I have enabled printer sharing, and selected files to share. I have a dumb question; how do I log on to my network, (If I have one)? All of the big networks I have used had a window that popped up for log in.
