Default Windows Updates & 691 Errors

On Windows XP Home SP1, I'm getting a 691 error when I
try to dial in to my ISP. They tell me that for some
reason a period is being appended to my username, making
it, of course, invalid. Apparently this is caused by one
of the Windows Updates, according to the tech at my ISP.
He says others have been having this issue as well, but
no one is sure exactly what it is. Does anyone have any
ideas as to what's going on? Any help will be
appreciated. Thank you!
