Windows Update COPY ERROR prevents changes to network components

I'm up a creek with this one: ever since Windows Update
failed with a COPY ERROR on "817778 - Advanced Networking
Pack for Windows XP", my network is dead, and further COPY
ERRORs prevent me from adding or removing networking
components.

Installation for 817778 originally failed with a COPY
ERROR for the file "C:\I386\zClientm.ex_". I browsed for
the file, and though it was clearly present, the wizard
refused to proceed on it. I exited the setup cleanly, and
all other Win Updates installed, apparently successfully.

Upon reboot, net access was dead, and I realized that
several network components in the Windows Components
Wizard were de-activated. I attempted to enable the PnP
component, and then add/remove various other network
components, and all failed with COPY ERRORs on files in
C:\I386 and C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386. In every
case, the files were present, but the wizard would not
proceed on them.

FWIW, I tried running esentutl on secedit.sdb, with no
visible change.

I also attempted to remove the Accessories/Games
component, which failed with a copy error for the
file "upnpui.dll".

In addition, the network setup wizard lists my NICs
as "disconnected".

Your windows may be so messed up that the only way to
recover is to wipe the hard drive clean and reload (from
your original CDs) and setup everything. I've had to do
this to both my workstation and laptop. My problems were
not as sever as yours but I tried everything to correct
the problems and nothing worked. After reloading and
completely updating all software, everything was fine.
Hopefully you can copy your data (user files) to CDRW or
DVDRW or you have some other way to back it up. don't
forget your email.

This will also remove any erroneous files/programs left
over from incomplete uninstalls and programs you no
longer use.

I know it's drastic, but sometimes you have to do it.
