Default Why does ping by name go to the wrong IP address?

Why does ping, ping to the wrong address? I have two computers, both
Windows XP, on a router to my Internet connection. One named compxp has
(at least right now) the address 198.162.1.100. But when I ping I get :

C:\Documents and Settings\Charles>ping compxp

Pinging compxp.san.rr.com [209.13.88.95] with 32 bytes of data:

Request timed out.
Request timed out.

Any ideas why that would be?
Thank you,
Chas

The problem is that you are using the DNS services from your Internet
service provider (rr = Road Runner???) The IP address shown may be
your "current" web IP address that your router is assigned. In order
for the LAN IP addresses to be shown your will need you have your own
true DNS servers on you home network or have the names entered in the
two PC's "host" files.

thanks, I saw an article that described what the host files should have
in them. But it didn't say where they should be. Where do they go on
the computers? thanks again, Chas

Windows NT/2000 (or upgrade XP Pro) ---> c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc
\hosts

Windows XP Home (or Pro 'clean install') --> c:\windows
\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

(you may need administrator access for Windows NT/2000/XP)

The reason is that in your Lan card TCP/IP Advanced settings you have a "DNS
Suffix" present. This is being added to any request for an internal computer.
As a result, the request goes out to your ISP's DNS server instead of being
resolved locally.

Unless you have an internal domain the Suffix field(s) should be blank.
