Living in a remote rural location I have had my wireless 'Open' but decided
to apply more security.
While Open a second PC (XP Pro) connected Ok using wireless (1st PC is
wired) I never had to do anything to set it up.
Having set the router to WPA the XP sits at trying find IP address. Nothing
asks me for the key.
I cannot find where to enter the key.
I have found a dialog box with fields for key and confirm key but they are
disabled (greyed). This comes up after the network, with correct SSID, has
been detected with full signal strength and I click on 'Change settings'
then in Wireless Connection Properties select the connection and click
Properties.
The tab 'Association' says 'this network needs a network key' so what
stupidity on the part of XP or myself is stopping the boxes being enabled so
it can be entered?
The tab 'Authentication' has some settings I do not understand even after
reading various articles on the subject.
Among the settings in the router I see reference to RADIUS. Having read some
articles about this I do not need to get involved with it. Do I need to
disable it in the router?
Thanks for any hints on how to proceed,
Derek
Wireless Zero Configuration is Started and Automatic.
Try to change the SSID

Thanks Jack.
I don't understand '802.11x Enterprise'.
In this router, for Network authentication I am offered "Open, Shared,
802.1x, WPA, WPA-PSK, WPA2, WPA2-PSK, Mixed WPA2/WPA and Mixed WPA2/WPA-PSK.
I have set it to WPA. Does that mean that the above is not enabled. Is that
the best choice? I will try others in due course.
I was NOT asked to enter any keys until I enabled WEP Encryption when up to
4 keys can be entered. I chose 128-bit.
I have already read the articles.

802.11x Enterprise wireless security is a specialized set up where a
separate RADIUS server is used to handle the user authentication.
Hi
It is in the Wireless configuration of the Wireless computer. http://www.ezlan.net/wireless/wzc4.jpg
Look at the center panel.

Thanks Jack.
I have seen that panel. The checkbox 'Enable IEEE...' is CHECKED and
DISABLED so I cannot get it off. I am assuming that is because the router is
set to enable it? So far I cannot find a way of removing from the router the
references to RADIUS which I believe is relevant to this?
I think the router is Plexus WBR-T2 but I have little documentation for it;
trying to track some down.

You chose ... poorly.
You should choose WPA-PSK (or better, WPA2-PSK). (WPA or WPA2 *without*
the "PSK" implies the use of a RADIUS server).
After you make that change to the router, do as Jack originally
suggested and clean out the list of Preferred Networks. Then connect again.
Thanks Lem, that's very helpful and I'll certainly try it out. I did intend
to try the other settings when I had time but this saves me a lot of time.
