Hi all, I have a somewhat strange problem. We have a wireless network in the house with 5 users connected, all using XP. The wirelss router connects to a 512k cable modem (soon to be upgraded to 728k).
I am having to regularly reboot both modem and router in order to keep a reasonable connection speed. Immediately after the reboot my ping times are fine, well within acceptable limits, however....within an hour or so the ping times start to climb rapidly to the point where loading web pages/running games etc becomes almost pointless.
At first i thought it may be due to traffic over the wireless network (people downloading large files etc) however the problem occurrs in the same way regardless of how many people are actually using the network at the time and seemingly irrespective of what they are doing (even if i'm the only user connected at the time) The problem is not exclusive to my PC.
I have checked my computer (and some others) for spyware/trojans/viruses and do so regularly....all users (bar one possibly) have fully updated AV programs, anti spyware, personal firewalls and up to date versions of XP (including critical updates).
Does anyone know why this may be happening and what I could do about it?
Any help would be much appreciated.
There could be several reasons for this.
1. This has been a problem on many Routers with some of their initial firmware releases. Upgrade your Router to the latest Firmware available and see how it goes.
2. More recently, infection by the Welchia virus will cause these symptoms. Search for 'remove Welchia' in any Anitvirus website for a removal tool.
3. Your Router may not have the processing power for what you're asking from it. Routers below $200.00 are designed for Networks of up to 10 or maybe 20 users as a rule. For larger Networks, or where there are busy servers present, throughput figures become far more important and Routers like Snapgear, Stallion, Nexland, Cisco etc become the cheaper solution in the long run.
