I am running a network with XP Home, XP Professioal, a Mac G3 Beige. Let's
forget the Mac now, since my question regards Windows Networking.
I have a 60 GB USB hard drive attached to the XP Home Machine. I can see it
on the network and download files etc. However, I cannot change anything on
the drive from the XP Professional machine. It gives me the "access denied".
In Pro, I know I can set the permisions, but in XP HOme, it does not appear
that I can. I have set the drive up for sharing twice, and still no help.
Windows firewall "off"
Sygate firewall running
I currently use a BAT file to mount and share the drive on startup.
BTW, PCMACLAN allows the drive to be used under Apple Share. However,
Iusualy use the Windows network.
I'm guessing the USB drive is NTFS format? I'm only working on Win2k, but I'm guessing XP Pro has the same features (last I checked XP Home does not have what I'm going to mention).
I'm not a big expert on this but I run into the same promblem with shares on my home network... (like when I need change something that I made with another account or my room mates files)
If you right click and go to the properties dialog and go to security you should be able to go to the owner tab and change the owner to the account you are using. Hit apply and go to the Permissions tab and then add your account to permissions and setup permissions of read/write (view/edit does this if you are already have your account on there).
Then check the "Reset permissions on all child objects..." and apply and usually that will get you at least started with changing permissions if it won't let you.
However it might throw off any other machines that it connects to (like a mac or another XP, 2k machine that uses a different account).
And if you are not using NTFS on the USB drive then I don't think this suggestion would work (and since I don't have XP in front of me or memorized it might be different but I think you'd want to try to change ownership in this case).
Your instructions are perfect for XP Professional.
However, the drive is connected to the XP Home computer which does not offer
the permission settings or "child" settings you speak of. Thus my issue.
The drive IS NTFS.
So, I am still in the dilemma.

Sharing and Security, and put a check mark in the box "Allow network
users to change my files". Then see if the other computer can write
to it.
I'm sorry, but I don't know how to make that setting from a "net
share" command in a BAT file.

Thanksfor the advice, but it is already checked. Also, by implication I was
not trying to accomplish this through the BAT file. That simply calls a
sharename so the network will consistently recognize the drive. Any other
suggestions would be appreciated.
