usb/firewire to usb/ firewire transfer

on my desktop i have usb 2.0 and 1394 firewire. on my
laptop i have usb 1.0 and ieee 1394 firewire, the desktop
has 6 pin connections, the laptop firewire has a four pin
connection.
how can i connect both computers together? should i go
with the firewire since it might be faster than going
between the two different usb's from 2.0 to usb 1.0?
do i need a special cable or can i use the usb cable that
i use on my external harddrives? i have no room for an
ethernet card.. what special cable do i need, if any
other than the regular firewire and usb cable.

I transfer data between my laptop and desktop using a 4-to-6 pin
FireWire cable and XP's built-in FireWire networking capability.

Your local electronics or computer store might have the cable. If
not, here are a couple of good sources:

It isn't possible to connect two computers using a standard USB cable.
You can either:

1. Get a pair of USB Ethernet adapters and connect them just like
Ethernet adapters that mount inside a computer. Connecting two
computers directly, without a hub, switch, or router, requires a
specially wired crossover cable.

or:

2. Get a USB-to-USB cable, with added circuitry, that can connect two
computers directly. Here are some sites for more information:

Actual data transfer speeds using FireWire are at least 10 times
faster than USB 1.0 I haven't tried USB 2.0.

i connected firewire to firewire ran the set up some home
network on both computers.. i can connect the internet on
my laptop thru my desktop which the desktop is connected
to the net.. both computers have the 1394 network icon
1394 connection speed 400.0 mbps..connections are
enabled. i have a bridge on my laptop but not on my
desktop.. dont know if thats okay?? i can see my desktop
icon on my laptop but when i click on it says is not
accessible. network path was not found. i cant see any
thing on my desktop ... ive disconnected my firewall and
microsoft firewall and cant see each other computer..
i got the files shared with shared files on folder on
each computer by clicking on properties and picking the
sharing tab and have a small hand on the fles and or
folders but still wont see each other..
i just cant connect anything on each computer. ive tried
pinging EACH computer by its name in ms-dos by typing
ping (place name here) without the parenthesis. didnt
work and tried a seach with computer name , no go. do i
need a special firewire cable? i only have a standard
cable that came with my external hard drive that im
using..
