My new computer and internet access was working fine
until two days ago when the router address settings
dropped out. I restarted the router and modem and
everything worked... for awhile, till I shut and
restarted the sysytem. The settings dropped again. The
internal settings are correct for automatic settings.
When I try to repair the connection, I get an error
message "cannot renew IP address."
When I switch the ethernet connection to my laptop(xp
home), there are no problems. Is there something wrong
with the software in my new system(xp pro).
Try to set static Ip address on your winxp pro. Then check if connection to
the router is ok (ping). If it is OK, then set ip address back to dhcp and
look for an IP. If that does not resolve the problem, try removing your
network driver and reinstalling it.

Sebastjan,
I have the same trouble. I'm using a D-Link Router with two computers attached. One is working fine but the other one will no longer connect to the Internet. So, I know that the trouble is definitely the XP pc. When I try ipconfig /renew I get "The operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation." Do you have any idea what that means???
Thanks,
Paula
