Default Residential Gateway

I run a small home network with a Netgear DG824M router for internet access.

Kids machines (XP) detect the router and setup a 'residential gateway'
device in the network connections.

My machine doesn't seem to detect the router at all. Internet access is fine
as is sharing files etc across the network - however, messenger is a bit
twitchy.
My machine simply has the LAN connections in the network connections window,
no residential gateway at all.

I've tried netwrok wizard, re-installing upnp etc and its driving me mad.

Any idea how to get the residential gateway to appear on my system?

ta,
g.
