Remote Desktop through ActionTech Gateway
Problem connecting from outside gateway: "The page cannot be displayed"
I'm attempting to use Remote Desktop (RD) to connect to a computer 130 miles
away. I'm using my local 2 system LAN to learn how to setup RD and debug my
configuration.
HERE'S MY PROBLEM:
When I try http://140.99.73.147:3308/tsweb or http://140.99.73.147:3309/tsweb I get "The page cannot be displayed" error
message. The IE title bar says "Cannot find Server". I had someone try these
URLs from another location and they got the same message.
I need some help identifying what I've forgotten to configure or have
misconfigured,
HERE'S WHAT I'VE DONE:
I've got one local computer at 192.168.0.9 (Nine) and another at 192.168.0.8
(Eight) and the ActionTech DSL gateway is at 140.99.73.147.
1. Set the ActionTech to forward ports 3309 for system Nine and 3308 for
system Eight using the tcp protocol. The ActionTech screens shows: 3309-3309
tcp 192.168.0.9 and 3308-3308 tcp 192.168.0.8.
2. Set PortNumber value in the registry for each system,
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Terminal
Server\WinStations\RDP-Tcp, 3309 for Nine and 3308 for Eight.
3. Enabled RD in my computer properties: my computer->properties->remote
tab->checked RD allow box and Remote Assistance allow box for both
computers.
4. Enabled solicited and offer remote assistance in local group policy on
both computers.
5. Internet Connection Firewall is disabled and I shutdown zonealarm for the
tests.
When I use the RD connection dialog, all
programs->assocessories->communications->remote desktop connection,
192.168.0.8:3308 works from Nine and 192.168.0.9:3309 from Eight.
If your using the web based Remote Desktop then you also need to forward TCP Port 80 to the PC
running IIS through any firewall/NAT/router. Also note that some ISPs block TCP Port 80 because
running servers on home based systems violates the terms of service.
A simpler approach is to call using the normal Remote Desktop client using the public IP of the
firewall/NAT/router with the changed port appended.
Please post additional Remote Desktop questions to the microsoft.public.windowsxp.work_remotely news
group.
As a side note, your step 4 has nothing to do with Remote Desktop.
