Default problems joining a domain

I have a problem joining a domain and creating a local
user account using the Network ID button.
The user is allready created on the server.
When I attempt to add the user I get the message -

Your computer could not be joined to the domain because
the following error has occured:

Multiple connections to a server or shared resource by the
same user, using more then one user name are not allowed,
Disconnect all previous connections to the server or
shared resource and try again.

I do have admin rights and have tried changing the
computer name and workgroup, bu no joy. Please help as I
do not want to reformat the laptop.

Disconnect any mapped network drives, then try to join the domain.
