I have a wired network that has 11 or 12 computers connected all running a
mix of XP home & Vista. I have a 3com switched hub with 32 ports and all
network cards are 10/100. I have one computer that has a program that gets
shared by users on the network and everything works fine except for one
laptop running XP home. The laptop can see all of the computers on the
network and can share files with all but one. I can access the drive through
network neighborhood and move around to all locations on that drive. My
problem is that if I try to map the drive like I normally do it says no
connections to that system are available.
I can go to any other computer on the network and map to the computer
with no problem. I am only having the problem with the laptop. I have move
the network connection to another port and that didn't help. Two days ago I
was able to make the connection and it worked all day with no problem. I am
totally confused with this one.
Another thing is that I can take the same network cable and move it to
another computer and I can work with that one no problem. It is something to
do with a setting on the laptop. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

What operating system is the computer hosting the program running? If it is
not a server operating system, that explains the issue. You are bumping
into the concurrent inbound connection limitation. It worked before because
not all the computers were connecting to the shared resource at the same
time. This has nothing to do with the fact that the last computer is a
laptop or that it is running XP HE SP3. It worked two days ago because some
other computer wasn't accessing your pseudo-server and you were under the
limit of 10 connections. The limitation is on connections, not computers.

If you are indeed running an XP Pro pseudo-server, your options are to
replace it with a Microsoft server operating system such as Small Business
Server or a non-Microsoft operating system that has no such limitations
such as one of the many Linux distros.
If you are already running a server operating system and using Active
Directory, then please post back with that information.

Thanks for the response but that is not the problem for sure. All of the
systems work fine connected to the unit that is just running XP with a DOS
based program. We have no problem with any connections no matter which ones
are running but I can shut them all off and this one laptop still says the
system has too many connections. From the unit I am talking about it shows
only 3 connections.

[shrugs shoulders] Fine, don't believe me. I don't have any further ideas
for you. Hope you get your issue resolved.
