Default Power management and UPnP - future plans?

Dear group:

I am interested in power management of Internet devices. Does anyone
here know what might be future plans for UPnP to allow devices to
enter standby state? To my limited understanding, SSDP and other
inherent "behaviors" of UPnP require devices to be fully powered-up at
all times (see, for example, Q298653 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base
where it is said that by design standby is not allowed for UPnP). Is
my understanding correct? I would be very happy to hear perspectives
on how awareness of power management could, or could not, be
incorporated into UPnP. I believe that this is very important for two
reasons, 1) to save electricity (i.e., reduce your power bill), and 2)
to enable battery-powered devices (that inherently cannot stay
powered-on for very long) to participate in UPnP networks.

My web site on "Green TCP/IP" describes some of the economic issues of
always-on networks:

I look forward to hearing your insights (and corrections to my
misunderstandings as the case may be)!
