Default NETWORKING / WINDOWS xp HOME EDTION / WINDOWS SERVER 2000

I am trying to figure out how to network a Windows server 2000 with a laptop runing windows ME home edition and a ntgear prosafe vpn firewall model FVS318
any one with advice for a novice?
