Default Networking not staying active

I have a small home network, 1 wired pc, 1 wireless
laptop, and 1 networked printer with JetDirect card.
Both pcs are Dell, both have XP Pro. I am not able to
keep my network working.

I shut the laptop off all of the time, but the wired pc
stays on most of the time. I run Norton's Internet
securities, but have ruled this out as my problem. I have
setup full offices up pcs and have not had a problem,
just can't set up my own home network.

I am really fed up with XP pro and am considering going
back to 2000 or Win98SE. Can someone PLEASE help me?

It might help if you could describe the problem and its symptoms better than
"not able to keep my network working".
