Default Networking a laptop w/XP & a desktop w/98SE

Is there anything special, I should look for when I
attempt to network a laptop running XP and a desktop
running 98SE. I thought allowing 98SE default case for
networking and sharing of files on the desktop should
suffice. On the laptop, running XP I want to connect
into the network and share internet connection through
the network router and share files and printer connection
with the desktop (noted above). Is there a default
condition for the novice to follow?
