Alright, I've been trying to set up a temporary network for days now and nothing is working. In the past I would just connect both computers to the switch, enable the ethernet ports, install all the protocals and run the network wizard and windows would set everything up for me. Unfortunately this time that is not the case. When I try to run the network set up it creates a connection with an invalid ip address and straight zeros for everything else. If I repair the connection it assigns an IP address that starts with 169 and tells me that it couldn't renew the IP address. When I attempt to try it from a command prompt I have the same problem. I replaced all cables and tried a different switch; I even went out and bought a cross patch cable to no avail. The only thing that changed was that the host computer was finally able to get a 192.168.0.0 IP, but the client was still stuck with and 169 based IP. The strange thing was that on several occasions the client was able to see the host but was unable to access it; however, the host was never able to see the client on any occasion. When I attempted to configure the network manually and assigned the IP's myself neither computer could find the other on the network. I checked the switch out, but it was operating correctly and wasn't showing any problems. Lastly no matter what I tried I was unable to get DHCP up and running when I checked in IPCONFIG it always came up as diabled whether the network was configured manually, or automatically. The only time DHCP worked on any computer was when I changed the switch, but after reading the manual I discovered that was because the switch had its own DHCP server, and unfortuantely even when DHCP was working it only worked on the host, and the client was still stuck with a 169 IP. If anyone's got any ideas please let me know. One machine is running win XP Pro and the other is running Win XP Home. Both computers are using a Soyo KT based motherboard with built in 10/100 ethernet ports and an Athlon XP 2500+ CPU. And although it probably makes no difference one maching has 512MB of Mushkin PC3200 and the othe is running with 1.5GB of Kingston PC3200, one has a GeForce FX5700LE w/256MB of DDR and the other has a GeForce FX5600 w/256MB of DDR. One is using its onboard 6.1 audio, and the other is running with a Soundblaster Audigy Platinum Pro 5.1 Card. That's about it
If it shows that the network is connected but you just can't see the other computer then try creating a new folder anywhere on both computers and name it " shared " . That worked for me, I couldn't see either computer untill I made that folder and the it worked fine. -- Good Luck
IT WORKED!!!!! IT WORKED, IT WORKED IT WORKED IT WORKED!!!!!!!!
*jumps up and down in joy*
Mark, don't take this the wrong way, but I could kiss you dude. We (Aarchel and I), beat our heads against this thing for almost two days, with nothing to show for it. Ya know what, after this last attempt at hooking up this network, to hell with kissing you, i'll marry you, and have your kids (that would be an amazing feat of science since i'm male).
