OK so I'm working on this computer. Fresh copy of XP Pro SP2. First off went into network connections and nothing was there. Then brought up this How to troubleshoot missing network connections icons in Windows Server 2003 and in Windows XP article and have been trying to run through all the steps. For the most part I've been able to get through them after a few hours of trying different things. My first issue is when I bring up Services and make sure all the necessary ones are running, everything starts up fine if they're not already running (which is one service that was already running). Ok so I'll go back to network connections and finally see the LAN connection. It's not connected, but I suppose it's progress. Did some of the other steps one of which required a reboot and when I get back in, all the services that I had started and set to "Automatic" are again not running. Still show as automatic, but they don't run automatically. I"m stumped and can't seem to find any other instance of this issue documented on the net or the MS KB. HELP!!!

Forgive me for mentioning this but since you didn't give details...
After doing the clean install, did you install the drivers for all the
hardware?
