Default Network cable unplugged

Had a storm in area and ever since I can't connect to the
internet. IT says I have a network cable unplugged. Did
troubleshooting with provider. They didn't know what to do
so I replaced the ethernet cable. I've done the ping test
and it says media disconnected. Any help trying to figure
this out would be appreciated

That message means that Windows XP can't detect a connection between
your computer's network card and another device. It's possible that
the network card, network cable, or your broadband connection device
(cable modem, DSL modem, router, etc) has been damaged.

Can you try connecting a different computer or network card? Can you
try a different cable?

I can't connect to another computer. Ran diagnostics and it
says my network card is working. Replaced cable and didn't
help. The light on the back of my meodem doesn't light up
but the ones on the back of my computer do. I ordered
another modem hoping this is the problem. Thanks, Sam

Steve, I have a really weird situation. I have a Win2K Pro desktop (home
network server); WinXP Home laptop, and Win98 desktop networked thru a
Linksys hub. I get the "network cable unplugged" message ONLY on the WinXP
machine ONLY when the Win98 machine is used. The message will continually
cycle whenever the following startup sequence is done ... Win2K (always
first) then WinXP then Win98. If the Win98 unit is running before I start
the WinXP unit, I do not receive the messages.

Your help will be appreciated.

Bruce

That's weird, all right, Bruce. If you have a hub, not a switch, make
sure that each computer's network card is configured to use half
duplex. Full duplex can cause problems with a hub. Details here:

Windows XP Network Troubleshooting - Problems with Network Cards
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...etworkcard.htm

If that doesn't help, try using different hub ports or rebooting the
hub when the problem occurs.

Thanks, Steve. I've read about changing the duplex elsewhere and wasn't
sure that I would sacrifice any transmission speed. All 3 cards are set at
full duplex & 100MB (not auto). I'll change them to half duplex and see if
it stops the messages.

What about auto DHCP from my DSL Modem/Router? I've thought about setting
the addresses manually to help in both network/internet speed and lost
connections.

Thanks,
Bruce

Default Re: Network cable unplugged

I do not have the W98, W2K situation mentioned, but I do have the problem
like quite a few people. I have tried all the suggestions, Articles 814152
& 811595, IEEE 802 not checked, device power off is not enabled and setting
to half duplex as you mentioned here. Still have the random pop ups saying
cable not connected then connected. Also set my Linksys Router to not time
out and disable the connection. No luck.

Other computers connected via the router also running XP do not have the
problem. I assume it must be my Lan Card and configuration some how. Any
other suggestions?

Thanks for any direction or help you can give me.
