Default Network between Laptop & Desktop

Hello Everyone:

I had a little problem with my Laptop and the only way to fix it is re-installing everything. Unfortunately, I have gygas of information I don't want to lose (mainly, MP3), and one of the spoiled parts of the Laptop is my Disk Drive. I want to transfer my information from my Laptop to my computer, but I don't know how to make a network, or Lan, or whatever this transfer of information is called. I'll be very grateful if someone could tell me what must I have to have and do in order to transfer information between my 2 computers. Thanks in advance.

The simplest way is to buy an Ethernet Crossover Cable ( note this differs
from an Ethernet Straight-through Cable ). Both the laptop and desktop will
need an Ethernet card.
Configure each Ethernet card with a valid IP ( 192.168.0.1 mask
255.255.255.0 and 192.168.0.2 mask 255.255.255.0 ). You then test the
connectivity between the two ( Ping 192.168.0.1 ). If this receives
replies, then its just a matter of copying your files across.

I tried what you tell me, however, when I plugged the Crossover Cable in both computers, they seemed not to recognize it. Perchance you know what is missing? I would like to say also that I don't know where you configure the IP adress. I know it is frustrating and that I should take electronic classes, but I will be very thankful if someone could help me with this.
