Default Network adapter not noticed

I am currently running windows 98 and windows XP on my
computer. I'm able to connect to the internet when I'm
using windows 98, but when I'm using windows XP I can't
connect. I've tried installing my network adapter but
when I run the install wizard, under installed hardware,
there is no network adapter option. Can someone help
please. I'm using a 3com ethernet card. Thanks
