I'm using XP pro on both the client and the host. My wireless network in
adhoc mode has been working for quite some time. Suddenly, the icon that
appears in network connections on the client to control the modem on the
host computer has disappeared so I can no longer control the modem from the
client. If I connect the modem from the host I can still share the internet
connection from the client over the host computer modem. I checked the modem
settings on the host and it is set to share and to allow others on the
network to control the modem. Everything is working just the host modem icon
is missing from the client. Can someone tell me how to get the icon back?
thanks,
Bill
I"m not sure exactly what is happening, but here are some of the things you
might try looking at:
1) On the Client, Have you recently installed a firewall or enabled the
Internet Connection Firewall on your the XP Pro machine? Enabling a firewall
on the client can make the Internet Connection Sharing machine public
connection disappear.
2) On the Internet Connection Sharing machine, in the network connections
folder, on the advanced tab of the property pages of the modem, is the
"allow other network users to control or disable the shared connection check
box checked?
3) On the host, have you tried disabling and reenabling Internet Connection
Sharing?
4) On the client, go to the control panel (classic view), "add or remove
programs" menu, select "add / remove Windows components", and double click
on "network services" component. is the "Internet Gateway Discovery and
Control Client Enabled?"
5) On the client, Try disabling and reenabling the ad-hoc wireless
connection. Changes in media state can "re-trigger" the detection of the
Internet Connection Sharing machine.
If you are still stuck after this, please let me know.
Thanks,
