Default Microsoft .NET Framework version 1.1

Good Evening:

In using Windows Update to update my computer with the latest Critical
updates and service packs, there is an option to install Microsoft .NET
Framework version 1.1 for Windows XP [I have the Home Edition].

I read the information for .NET Framework, but am a bit confused as to if
I need to install the update or not. Does this update have anything to do
with the .NET for Microsoft Messenger? Do I need to install this update?

Thank You for All Responses!
