Default Lost TCP/IP connectivity - seems to be a rare problem

Hi

Workstation (XP Pro) lost connectivity to the LAN (during an automatic
windows update - looks like this was caused by MS!). Seems to be an obscure
issue - can't find much about it on the web.

In the error log we get:

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

7001 - The Network Location Awareness (NLA) service depends on the TCP/IP
Protocol Driver service which failed to start because of the following error:
The specified driver is invalid.

7000 - The TCP/IP Protocol Driver service failed to start due to the
following error:
The specified driver is invalid.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

We have tried, with no joy:

1) netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
2) a system restore

Anything else we can try before a re-install?

By the way, the tcpip drivers are there, are the right size, and are
readable...
