Long Pause at Startup with LAN Connection Enables.
I have 2 Computers linked together, one running WIN98 and
the other running XP PRO. The network works fine, but i
have a problem on the XP machine when windows loads, the
desktop is loaded but i can't access the taskbar for about
2 minutes, when i hover over the start button etc i just
get the hourglass. After the 2 minute mark everything
works as normal. (It's as though windows is waiting for
something)
This has to be network related because when i disable the
network connection on the XP machine i don't have this
problem.

How does the XP machine get its IP address? If it's configured to
obtain an IP address automatically and there's no DHCP server on the
network, there will be a delay at startup. If the network connection
gets an IP address of 169.254.x.x, that's what's happening.

Hi Steve,
Thats sorted it, nice one. I manually assigned an ip, xp
no longer pauses at startup.

Daz.

Do you have any persistent drive connections to the Win98 machine?
