just a little more help please

Almost have my Home LAN fixed.
Using a Linksys router, with 4 XP PRO machines.
Assigned IP addresses.

I can now ping all computers.
If I switch to show Workgroup I can see and access all computers and all
drives.

It's only in Network Places that a couple of drives still won't show up.
I've set and reset sharing many times.

But some drives will only show up on a couple of computers and not on
others.


I think it's something with my attempt to change a computers name.
At least that's how it started.


Anybody have the one magic bullet?

My magic bullet is to add a network place and enter the
location manually. i.e.

\\computerName\sharedFolder

Instead of browsing through the network.

Another way of doing this is to enter the IP address of
the computer you're trying to reach. I believe that most
Linksys routers store the MAC addresses of the computers
connected to it and assigns them the same IP when they
connect to the network. Try entering the IP of the
computer as well.

That seems to work for the OTHER computers on my home LAN.
I now have each in a 'Group' on the My Network Places screen.
But it won't show the host computer in it's own group, just under 'unknown'


and if I go to a drive, and try to return, it 'refreshes' and takes a long
time to display the screen.

You might just try to forget the default My Network
Places and just make your own folder with all your
network links.

For some reason, when XP computers browse over a network
through My Network Places, they check out all kinds of
wierd settings on the remote computer like the scheduled
tasks and such (don't ask me why, go kick Bill Gates'
***...).

Just make a folder on your desktop that has a link to the
other computers (the computer itself). Then when you open
the computer up, you should only see the folders and
printers that are shared on that comp. That's the way
that I've done my networking, and it makes even more of a
difference if you're trying to connect to a non-XP
machine.
