Something has taken over my ipconfiguration and I cannot
release it. My XP professionl now has an Autoconfiguration
IP and I can't connect to the internet any longer?

The autoconfiguration IP address (169.254.x.x) is the result of a
problem with your network connection, not the cause of the problem.
Something is preventing your computer from communicating with a DHCP
server to obtain an IP address. After waiting approximately one
minute for a DHCP server, Windows XP gives up and assigns itself an
autoconfiguration address. That address wasn't assigned by a DHCP
server, so it can't be released.
