I have a friend that cannot connect to the Internet through a router. His 5
year old HP cannot obtain an IP address. I have uninstalled and installed
his ethernet connector that is installed on his motherboard. He bought the
computer from my in-laws, and they used a wireless modem for this computer.
I am not sure what to do short of re-installing Windows. He does have XP,
but not sure if it is SP1 or 2.

It would help if you post the response from ipconfig/all. All I can see is
that the computer has a problem. And, solving such a problem as certainly
does not requre a complete re-install.
You can obtain the windows version from winver. If I am not mistaken, the
system properties icon in the control panel shows the version as well.
