Internet Explorer works only for first 5 minutes after reboot, Why?

This one is a challenge!

I have Windows XP Service Pack 2 and the latest updates and connect to
the internet either through a wireless card or with a USB cable
directly to my cable modem.

I went into Advanced Settings of the Windows Firewall and enabled all
services (e.g., FTP, HTTP, HTTPS, POP3, SMTP, Telnet)

I can ping and tracert any and all external web sites at all times,
even after IE stops working as follows:

When I reboot, Internet Explorer works for the first five minutes,
after which I get "the page cannot be displayed." Network Connections
still says the connection is perfect. I can disable and enable the
network connection with no errors messages.

FTP also has funky symptoms: I can login to an FTP site with name and
password, change directories to directories I already know are there,
but `dir` and `ls` time out and I lose the FTP connection.

Where should I look? I checked Task Manager and Services.

Is there something I need to enable or disable?

Could a hardware failure cause these symptoms?

Any information will be helpful.

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy
and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further
information.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer.Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.
