When attempting to open explorer I get a
message "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and
needs to close". The error signature displays, appname
is iexplore.exe, modname is winshow.dll. Any ideas? I'm
using Windows XP Pro
Your pc has been infected with the sasserworm virus, d/l the removal tool and run it, all should then be well. Ensure you have an up to date antivirus program installed and keep up to date with all Microsoft patches.

Download AdAware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/, install it, start it up
and get the latest updates, then run it and clean off everything it finds.
Restart the system and run it again. Keep running, cleaning and restarting
until clean. Some stubborn pests may require a startup in Safe Mode to
clean fully.
I'd also recommend a visit here to get the CWS cleaner, which targets one
specific pest:
