I am having trouble connecting to the internet. It seems
to be a problem with the system software as the same thing
is happening with both my wireless network and when I
connect directly to the dsl modem. For both, the
connection seems to be enabled, however, when I try to use
internet applications, they don't seem to recognize the
connection. Any ideas? I have been able to connect to
networks in the past, but the past 2 networks I have tried
to connect to have no worked. Any ideas? Thanks.

Debbie,
Try a couple quick tests to start please.
From a command window (Start - Run - cmd):
1) Ping www.yahoo.com.
2) Ping 66.94.230.33.
Report error messages.
From your browser:
3) Browse www.yahoo.com.
4) Browse 66.94.230.33.
Report error messages.
Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.
Thank you very much for your help. I ran the tests you
mentioned with both the wireless connection and with the
computer directly connected to the dsl modem through an
ethernet cable. The following are the error messages for
each of them.
Thanks again,
Debbie

Oh, also i have tried SFC.exe to verify system files, and
created a new user in case it was the registry, both
without success.

I seem to have gotten the wireless connection working,
though, as usual with me and computer problems, I have no
idea how. Thanks again for all your help. I was
surprised to receive an answer so quickly.

Debbie,
OK, that rules out the possible dns hijack (which has been reported recently in
various forums).
Please provide ipconfig information for each computer, again for each
connection.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.
I'm wondering if there's something you're explaining that I'm not getting.
"I have been able to connect to networks in the past, but the past 2 networks I

What networks have you connected to in the past?
What are the past 2 networks?
What did you change just before this problem was observed?
