How do I get 2 XPs w/ a crossover to communicate?

I set both up on the same domain name and different static IP addresses. They
are able to say the LAN is connected, but I cannot exchange any data between
them.

I tried pinging, but each ones' other would time out.

What I have set up currently is:
| "Local Area Connection Properties"
| -> "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" -> "Properties"
| -> -> "Use the following IP address:"
| -> -> -> IP addr. and subnet mask set, but not gateway
| -> -> "Use the following DNS server addresses:"
| -> -> -> None are set

If any steps are needed, (like setting up one XP to be a DHCP or DNS,)
please provide help for me.

Are both static addresses on the same subnet?

Try setting both computers' IP settings to "Obtain an IP address
Automatically". Then connect them together. After a minute or so, you
will get the message "Limited or no connectivity". At that point, find
out which IP address they have. It should be a 169.254.x.x number.
Try pinging the other number verify it will ping. Then double-click on
"My Computer" to bring up an Explorer window. In the Address window,
enter "\\169.254.x.x" [ip address of other computer]. Hopefully it
will see it and connect.

I can ping and get the other to recieve the data, but it does not come back.
Entering the IP address invokes nothing, but a delay before the "not found"
message.
When I have them both on static IPs, they connect, but don't go any further.

Can you give step-by-step on Configuring ZoneAlarm Free Edition, and (if
need be) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition?

Yes, subnet mask is the same.

Sorry, I am not familiar with Zone Alarm. Usually there is an
"Exceptions" setting somewhere and you can specify Windows File Sharing
as an exception.

Working w/o ZoneAlarm or AVG on should (hopefully) solve the problem (as
told by my work experience mentor). Anyways, I don't need to use the
computers together for any REAL reasons-- I just wanted to so I could have
fun with them.
