I'm trying to configure my desktop and notebook computer
both running windows XP Home edition to communicate with
each other for file & printer sharing through a wireless
router.
The desktop is wired to the router, the notebook is
wireless. I have both configured to reach the internet
through the router with no problem. I cannot get the 2
to file share. Both have the same work group name. If
I attache the notebook with a cable from the router the
desktop can "see" the notebook under network places, but
cannot access it. When wireless, the desktop
cannot "see" the notebook under network places.
I've tried multiple configurations through the network
wizard with no success.

Ed,
Do any of the computers have a software firewall (ICF or third party)? If so,
you need to configure them for file sharing, by opening ports TCP 139, 445 and
UDP 137, 138, 445, and / or by identifying the other computers as present in the
Local (Trusted) zone. Firewall configurations are a very common cause of
(network) browser, and file sharing, problems.
From each computer, check connectivity:
1) Ping the other by name.
2) Ping the other by ip address.
3) Ping itself by name.
4) Ping itself by ip address.
5) Ping 127.0.0.1.
6) Ping the router.
Report success / failure of each of 12 pings.
Please provide ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.
Please provide static route tables for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "route print >c:\route.txt" into the command window -
Open c:\route.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

Chuck,
I have the same problem. Both computers run XP Home. My
desktop is wired into a wireless router and the laptop is
wireless. I can access my laptop from my desktop, but
cannot access my desktop from my laptop. It
says "\\Desktop is not acessible. You might not have
permission to use this network resource. Contact the
administrator of this server to find out if you have
access permissions. Access is denied."
I have disabled the windows fire wall. I have done all 12
pings and they all work just fine. Below is the ipconfig
for each computer
