Default firewire notebook adapter ! please help !!

hi all,
i will try not to ramble on!
i have a digital camera which attaches to my pc with firewire.
just have brought a laptop to replace pc at home and a firewire connector to run my camera through.
it installs as you would think , but it then comes up with an error." saying device could not start " and (code10).
any ideas guys and gals ?
im desperate for it to work , (doing pics for bro's wedding at weekend!!)
any advice you can give me is very much appreciated .
