hello, we have developed a problem in the past couple of weeks; let me
give you some info on the configuration;
we have two computers, both on XP pro- fat 32; one connects to the
internet with a direct link thru a nic; into a cable modem; we have
internet connection sharing enabled and the host computer is connected
to the client through a second nic, dhcp ip; the host computer has a
firewall on the nic which connects to the internet and has a admin
password, and the computer name is FRED; its on the workgroup called
CAMEL; the second computer, WILMA has a single nic, connects to a hub,
which is connected to the host, FRED; this computer has three user
accounts, no passwords, also XP pro-fat32; can connect to the internet
fine (the reason we have the hub is sometimes we connect 3rd or 4th
computers to the network)
Both computers are online, can ping their localhost obviously and each
other; however, the file sharing is a bit retarted, when you type the
name of the computer from the host (when you type \\wilma\ on fred) it
will list all of the shared folders; can go in etc. if you type the
name of the host from the client (when you type \\fred\ from wilma) it
will give an error message saying we dont the necessary rights and we
should contact the administrator; this is where it gets interesting,
if we type the name of the folder after the computer name (such as
\\fred\mp3s\radiohead ) it will go in without any problems.
its the same case if you use the ip addresses too (both are dhcp
assigned, 192.etc addresses).
What I have done up to now is ;
system restore (they worked ok in the past)
reinstallation of all ethernet cards
resetting the tcp/ip protocol
re-runing the wizard
re builded the workgroup, changed computer names and workgroup names
a system file check
tried with simple file sharing and normal file sharing, still the
same; there seems to be a setting which is preventing me from seeing
the directory on the host computer.
any ideas? all i want to do is to type the name of the computer and
see the list of shared folders, tried to look through local
permissions, couldnt find anything relevant
You need to have the same user accounts and passwords on all computers.
Also, the default setting for XP Pro is to require a password for network
access. This may be the problem with Fred since you have three accounts and
none of them have passwords.
