Default DSL Setup

I am thinking about getting the Yahoo/DSL basic DSL service to take the
advantage of the $26/month offer. However, the package provides only a
dynamic ip address. I have 3 pcs at home that all need to get access to the
internet. I understand that for more than one connection to the internet, I
would need to buy a DSL router in addition to the DSL modem. My question is:
what would be the gateway ip address for each and all of the pcs if the
package supplies the dynamic IP address subject to change? Better yet, could
anyone provid me with the setup layout and instruction if that could be
done. Thank you.

Hello

Well who ever your provider your address will be public from
your ISP, once you install a CABLE/DSL router your address
will become private and will be a 192.168. etc address. Each
DSL/CABLE router will have it's own comfiguration on
how to set it up and that's all you need just read the instructions

For dynamic plans your public IP and gateway are dynamic and negotiated by
normal PPP protocols when PPPoE connects. So you really do not have to
worry about it. Nameservers can also be automatically assigned, or you
can hard code them.

The standard modem is a 5100b, which by default is modem/router (but just
1 ethernet port). Not sure if you can just stick a switch on it for
multiple PCs. It can be switched to a bridge modem so your PC or 3rd
party router could do PPPoE. I will find out more about that when I set
up my boss' connection (I have older 5360 bridge modem using a Linux PC
for pppoe/router).

For $50 extra you could get a Two-Wire modem/router. I think it includes
wireless and HPNA (networking via phone lines).

If you need to find your home adsl connection from the internet, there are
dynamic DNS services available. I use no-ip.com.

Alvin and David,

Thank you very much for the replies. I have not yet subscribed to that yet.
David mentioned that he is doing one soon. So I hope he will share his
experience with me (in fact, with all forum readers).
