I have the following system and everything actually works.
PC connected with wifi [Sitecom ADSL2+ Modem/Router 54G Turbo WL-174] by USB
cable.
I have internet acces and also WPA-secure wifi access with my own network.
My question is, that I don't have any shortcut icon for the adsl connection.
On the taskbar I have an icon which says "LAN-connection", but nothing about
adsl.
When I look in network connections window I have
-----------------
under dialup modem connection
- one (emergency) connection
under LAN of fast internet connection
- LAN-connection
- 1394 connection (firewire)
under PAN personal area network
- one bluetooth connection

Isn't there supposed to be a connection icon for the adsl modem?
I want to be able to control the adsl connection (manual disconnect when
needed) too, like I can with the dialup modem.
I do have to mention that I have not installed the CD that came with the
Sitecom modem/router, because everything already seems to work and I thought
installing the CD would only take up space needlessly.
Is it wise to install the Sitecom CD or not?

The DSL Modem is connected inside the box to the Router part.
The Router part produces Internet connection to the Network.
Your Internet connection is Local Network Connection.
I.e. the DSL is Not connected as DSL beyond the inside of the Modem/Router
box and there is No need for DSL icon or to connect to it.

So I understand the icon I have (on the taskbar tray) refers to the network
card in the pc. But rightclicking on this icon does not show an option for
disconnecting. It does have an option disable, but then the icon disappears
altogether.
On my (Vista) laptop I have a similar icon, but that one allows me to
'disconnect' (from wifi network). After disconnecting the icon does not
disappear, but it displays a red cross.
Can I make the icon work the same way on the (XP) PC too?

I already had the two checkboxes checked. The issue still stands.
But I notice your example refers to a wifi connection.
The connection on my PC is LAN connection. Don't know wether that causes the
difference...

Vista appears to use the same "terms" for setting up a wired /
wireless LAN connection. It permits you disconnect from either
networks. XP treats wireless and / wired networks differently. You
can disconnect from wireless network but you can only disable wired
network. However, whenever a wired network is disabled, XP will
remove the icon from the System Tray. You will have to access the
Control Panel --> Networking so as to "enable" it.
