Cannot Login to Windows XP after changing from Domain to Workgroup
My laptop is belongs to my company domain. I was trying
to connect my laptop from work (uses a domain) to my
network at home (uses a workgroup). So, at home I
selected "Workgroup" so that I can connect to my local
drives and printer. I did that thinking that once I am
done, I could go back and change the settings again
to "Domain".
Now, I cannot even login. I use the same userid and
password that usually works, but login fail. Before the
changes, I was able to login at home even without the
domain controller.

Jay,
Bad news. You'll have to have a domain admin rejoin the laptop to the domain.
:-(
If you rejoin to the domain, you can always log in locally when you're at home
and access workgroup resources. After the laptop has been joined to the domain,
when you have it at home logged in locally, you won't see any resources directly
under Network Neighborhood / My Network Places - but look a little deeper, under
Entire Network - Microsoft Windows Network, and you can always find your
workgroup.
Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.
Re: Cannot Login to Windows XP after changing from Domain to Workg
Thanks, Chuck. I'm still on friendly terms with my old employer, so this is a can-do. In fact, I'm headed there this coming Wednesday.
I *hope* the local admin there knows enough about how to re-join the computer to the domain. But -- wouldn't he/she have to have Admin access to my PC's config in order to re-join it? Nobody there seems to have a valid Admin password for this machine.... So if that's required, I may be *******.... If not, there's hope!
Thanks again for your answer. I was getting worried this forum wouldn't help me solve my problem. People like you who take your own time to answer questions like this are what make the tech "fraternity" great to belong to.
